1st August 2014
  • Government of India conferred Navratna status to CONCOR i.e. container corporation of India Ltd. This company provides the logistics solution and has largest network of 62 inland container depots in India.
  • RIP Robert Frederick: Robert Frederick Panara was a pioneer of the deaf studies passed away in Rochester US. In 1965, he establishes the first American technical college for the deaf as national Technical Institute for deaf.
  • Announcement of RBI deputy governor: S S Mundra takes the charge of RBI deputy governor for a three-year term. He was the CMD of Bank of Baroda.
  • 2014 Ramon Magsaysay award was announced: The award was conferred to five individuals and one organisation. The awardee are Saur Marlina Manurung from Indonesia , Randy Halasan from Philippines , Hu Shuli from china , Omara Khan Masoudi from Afghanistan and Wang Canfa from china. The organisation who received award is The Citizen Foundation from Pakistan.

  • Filmmaker Muzaffar Ali is selected for Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award 2014. The award is given every year for contribution in the promotion of communal harmony and social goodwill.
  • NASA released the list of payloads to be sent over the Mars Rover by 2020. The rover will perform the geological and atmospheric survey of the mar’s landscape. The total of seven payloads are to be sent.
  • Researchers have found evidence to explain why the sun’s outer atmosphere is much hotter than its surface. Scientist has concluded that infinite number of nanoflares has heated up the solar material in the atmosphere.
3rd August 2014
  • China unveiled its intercontinental Ballistic Missile the Dongfend-41 that range up to 12000km and is the world’s longest-range missile. It is capable of carrying three nuclear warheads.
  • Right to Research foundation (R2R) was launched to promote the Indian researchers. The foundation is launched at Pune’s biotech part. The researchers named it as a ‘Intelligent Reserve Brain Drain’.
  • India stood fifth in the 2014 Glasgow commonwealth games. India won total of 64 medals. England topped the list by winning 174 medals out of which 58 were gold medals.

  • Scientist have identified the new species of the Australian Humpback Dolphin. The scientific name of the dolphin is Sousa Sahulensis. This dolphin group is widespread from west coast of Africa to the north coast of Australia.
  • PM Narendra Modi visited Nepal to boost the neighbouring country relationship with India. He was the first Indian PM to visit Nepal after 17 years. He gave Nepal the HIT formula showing the India’s willingness to help Nepal.
  • According to Bank of American report, the reserve bank of India will continue to buy the dollars to enhance the foreign exchange currency to boost the India’s import.

  • Arvind Gupta is appointed as a deputy National security advisor. He was a ex- Indian foreign officer.
  • Bharathiya Mahila bank won the core banking initiative award 2014. The award ceremony was help in Singapore. CMD of Bharathiya Mahila bank Usha received the award.
  • PM Narendra Modi to induct country’s largest warship INS Kolkata. It is a 6800 tonnes warship and forms the giant leap in ship building technology.

  • Cartoonist Pran kumar Sharma died in Gurgaon. He was given a title of Walt Disney of India.
  • NASA Mars rover 2020 mission will have MOXIE to generate oxygen on the mars. It will produce oxygen in mars by using the Martin atmospheric carbon dioxide. It is among the seven selected instrument to be sent on the mars.

  • Government of India plan to set up the Telecom finance corporation. It would be considered as a non banking finance companies and non deposit finance companies would be set u[ in 12th five year plan. It would be a public sector unit under the departmentof telecom.
  • Micromax became the India’s largest mobile supplier in 2014. It dethrones the Samsung in its supply chain. It is considered to be the 10th largest mobile brand in the mobile shipments.
  •  Liberia declared state of emergency as the out break of  the deadly disease Ebola virus.

  • Arjun award selection committee to be head by the kapil Dev. Ajitpal the hockey player is also to be in the charge of the selection committee.
  • Union government introduced the two labour reforms bills. The two bills are the factories bill 2014 and the Apprentices bill 2014. This bill was introduced to ensure the safety and welfare of the workers at the work place.
  • Researchers have discovered the India’s first jellyfish lake in Gujarat. Biologist found that the bottom of the lake is carpeted with the type of jellyfish known as a upside down jellyfish.
9th August 2014
  • The international day of Indigenous people was observed on this day. The theme for this day was ‘Bridging the gap: implementing he rights of indigenous people’. This event is celebrated to promote the right for the indigenous populations.
  • World health organisation declared the disease Ebola as the international emergency. The disease was out break in Guinea in 2014 and it claimed at least 932 lives. The WHO appealed for the global aid to affected countries.
10th August 2014
  • Indian women’s team won the gold medal at the Archery world cup stage IV in Poland. India bagged a total of five medals at the last day of the event. The men’s team settled for silver medal.
  • Uttarkhand government forms a committee on the industries using a silica dust. The committee will be headed by the additional chief secretary S Raju. The committee decided to conduct the health check up camp to know the health about the workers in the industries.
  • China ban to use coal in its capital city Beijing by 2020. The city drew nearly 25% of its energy consumption by coal. Since the coal fired and heating is the major contribution of the greenhouse gas emission. The huge pressure on the china government to clean up the polluted environment. Hence the main and top agenda of the china government is to protect and clean up the environment.

  • Lok Sabha passed the SEBI [Securities Exchange board of India] 2014 bill. The bill includes that it provides express powers for the settlement. It provides SEBI powers of recovery of amounts.
  • Actor and comedian Robin Williams died at California. He won Oscar award for his performance in Good will hunting as a supporting actor.
  • Bombay high court has banned the children below age of 18 in Govindas Dahi handi festival. The court also restricted the height of the pyramid to 20 feet.

  • The world elephant day was observed across the world for the protection of elephant ‘s. It is celebrate to create awareness around the plight of African and Asian elephants.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee presented the outstanding parliamentarian awards to finance minister Arun Jaitley’s , Karan Singh and Sharad Yadav. It was given for discharge of the parliamentarian duties.

  • The international Political Science Association has honoured the Delhi university professor Dr Sunil Kumar The award was given in the 23rd world congress of political science held in Montreal.
  • Russian group of hackers ‘ CyberVor’ has stolen 1.2 billion usernames and passwords belonging to more than 500 million email addresses. The hacked information belongs to 4,20,000 websites.
  • Rosetta became the first spacecraft to go into orbit around the comet. It has traversed around 6bn km almost three times around the earth.

  • Rajni Razdan is selected as the chairman of the union public service commission. He is a former IAS officer of Haryana cadre.
  • PM Narendra modi inaugurated the hydel power projects at Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a 45MW project on the river Indus.

  • India’s highest peacetime award Ashok Chakra is awarded to Major Mukund Varadarajan. He was leading the anti –terrorist operation search operation in jammu and Kashmir.
  • Indian origin person Manjul Bhagrava won the fields medal 2014. It is the nobel prize for the mathematics.

  • Government has relaunched the varishtha pension bima yojana for the benefits of the citizen of aged 60 and above.

  • Haryana government has increase the age of retirement from 58 to 60 years. It also increased the 25% in dearness allowance.
  • Roger Federer of  Switzerland won the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament men’s singles title. Serena Williams of U.S has won her first Cincinnati title at the sixth attempt with a convincing 6-4 6-1 victory over Ana Ivanovic of Sebia.

  • The All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced that Jammu and Kashmir will host Football Federation Cup in August 2015. The Federation Cup is an annual club level football tournament of India. It was started in 1977.
  • World-renowned yoga guru Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (BKS) Iyengar died  in Pune. He authored 14 books on yoga practice.
  • K.V.Thomas is appointed as a chairman of the Public accounts committee. He was the 94th chairman of the PAC.

  • Union cabinet has approved the Nagpur metro rail project, which is 38.21km long. The project has two corridors i.e. north- south and east-west corridor. It will be implemented as a joint venture between central government and state government.
  • Andhra Pradesh government has decided to make Vijayawada as a ad-hoc capital of the state.
  • Justice R Banumathi became the first women Supreme Court judge from Tamil Nadu.
  • Roger Federer a tennis star became the first man to win 300 matches at ATP masters of 1000 level.

  • Kannada writer U R Ananatmurthy died in Bangalore. He was the recipient of jnanpith award.He became a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2004.
  • T M Bhasin CMD of Indian bank became the chairman of the Indian banks association for 2014-15.
  • According to the survey conducted by the academic ranking of world universities, th Indian institute of science is the only Indian institute to be in the top 500 universities of the world.
